GLP -1 medications are a class of medications known as glucagon-like-peptide (GLP-1) receptor agonists. They mimic the GLP-1 hormone, incretin, that is already in our body and is released in the gastrointestinal tract in response to eating. Semaglutide is an example.
Tirzepatide also mimics incretin as well as an additional GIP (glucose dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) increasing the results of weight loss.
They delay gastric emptying leading to a feeling of fullness and satisfaction with smaller meal sizes. They reduce the production of sugar in the liver and stimulate the pancreas to secrete insulin.
